Why you need a closet cleanse

Embarking on a closet cleanse might seem like an emotional journey, especially if you're someone who has a special attachment to their belongings.

Let's face it, we all have our favorite pieces, those items we hold onto because of the memories they carry or the hope that we might wear them again someday. But, as we move through life, our style evolves, and so do our needs. That's why it's so essential to gently make room for the new while cherishing the past.

In general I recommend doing a closet cleanse before the warm and the cold season. Approach this really conscientiously because tidying up your wardrobe uncovers all the mistakes we make in our past purchases, for example:

  • You buy the same items of clothing all the time, so that you have 5 black turtlenecks and not a single light one.

  • Choosing the same cuts all the time, so your outfits get boring very quickly, choosing clothes that don't fit in with the rest of your wardrobe.

  • You choose clothes that you won't be able to wear most of the time.

Why we choose clothes we will not use?

We all have little weaknesses when shopping, which is why it's so important when making space to analyse what we already have and where it came from.

In the age of the Internet, there are many traps waiting for us. Everyone encourages you to buy something new and trendy that will not suit you or makes you slide into emotional shopping. I encourage you to be sensible, to control your spending and what goes into your wardrobe. It is easy to buy the next thing and spend huge amounts of money every season on new clothes. This is neither good for our wallet nor good for the environment.

Try on every piece from your wardrobe that you are not sure about!

Step by step examine every piece in your wardrobe and decide whether to keep them or not. Some pieces will need some love by either fixing them, washing them before the season or by using a garment shaver.

After sorting your clothes, you can already see what you have, what you are missing and what new items you would like to add to your wardrobe this season.

The same steps should be taken when sorting out your shoes, as many of them will need to be taken to a cobbler for a shoe shine or waterproofing before the season.

Which pieces should leave your closet?

  • Clothes in the wrong size that are either too big or too small

  • Clothes with stains

  • Clothes that have holes or signs of age

  • Clothes that are out of your style preference and vision for yourself

  • Clothes that you have not worn in the last 2 years you will probably not use again

  • And lastly uncomfortable clothes!

Reminder

“The style you develop for yourself will be yours for years to come, it will be unique and yours alone.”

Create a new list!

Once you can see exactly what you have and what you want to create, it is much easier to find out, what you are missing or don't need at all.

This will help you in the process.
